The winners are decided by a vote of NCAA Division I soccer coaches whose programs are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Coaches select three players on the ballot. A 1st place vote is worth three points, a 2nd place vote is two points and a 3rd place is one point. The player receiving the highest point total wins the award.
